About the Excellence AwardsNEBHE launched the New
England Higher Education Excellence Awards in 2003 to recognize
individuals and institutions that have made substantive contributions
to improving higher education opportunities for New England students.
NEBHE’s
mission is to promote greater educational opportunity for residents of
New England at the region’s 270 public and independent colleges and
universities. Individuals and organizations nominated during the
selection process that begins in the fall exemplify NEBHE’s mission
through their accomplishments.
Regional Awards
The Governor Walter R. Peterson Award for Leadership
- Presented to an individual from the government sector (a governor, state or federal legislator, mayor or city/state official).
- Must be considered as a lifetime achievement award for government officials.
- Must have demonstrated superior leadership in support of higher education, public policy or the advancement
of higher education opportunity (i.e., introduction of legislation or policies that benefit higher education).
The Eleanor M. McMahon Award for Lifetime Achievement
- Presented to an individual from the academic or business sectors.
- Must have consistently been dedicated in his/her efforts on behalf of higher education and affected his/her community in positive ways.
- Must have been previously recognized and awarded for his/her work in higher education.
The Robert J. McKenna Award for Program Achievement
- Presented to a program, organization, institution or business.
- Must have demonstrated innovative solutions to challenges facing New England higher education.
- Must be dedicated to issues such as access and affordability, including being committed to the advancement of
underrepresented populations in higher education.
The David C. Knapp Award for Trusteeship
- Presented to a person who is currently serving or formerly served as a trustee on the board of a New England college, university, higher education system or state governing board.
- Must have an outstanding record of accomplishment as a trustee.
- Must be dedicated to promoting the relationship between higher education and the New England economy.
State Merit Awards
One award is presented to an individual, program, organization, institution or business in each of the six New England states — Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
