Among Comings and Goings, Greene to Blow into Colby from Windy City

Colby College named University of Chicago Executive Vice President David Greene to be the 20th president of the 200-year-old private liberal arts college, effective July 1. He will succeed William Adams, who has been Colby's president since 2000. Greene previously served in planning roles at Brown University and Smith College.

Manchester Community College appointed Sandra Palmer as the interim dean of academic affairs. Previously, she was dean of academic affairs at Naugatuck Valley Community College.

Springfield College named Richard J. Wood the director of its Center for Wellness Education and Research.

Among Comings and Goings, Former UConn Diversity Chief Tapped as VP at Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) named Damon A. Williams to be its new senior vice president of program, training & youth development services. Williams joined BGCA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he served as vice provost and chief diversity officer, and on the faculty of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. He previously was chief diversity officer at the University of Connecticut.

The University of Maine System named Susan J. Hunter as the next vice chancellor for academic affairs for all seven of Maine’s public universities, effective Sept. 1.

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) appointed Carol Strohecker, currently director of the University of North Carolina’s multicampus Center for Design Innovation, to be RISD's vice provost for academic affairs.

Among Comings and Goings: NE HERC Names New Director; Assistant to ASU’s Crow to Head Bennington

Ruth Molina became director of the New England Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (NE HERC) after eight years managing faculty and staff recruitment at Bridgewater State University. She has led the NE HERC advertising committee and served on its diversity and steering committees. Molina succeeds Jennifer Ivers, who is assistant dean for faculty development at Harvard University and will stay on as NE HERC's representative to the national HERC board. Since summer 2011, NEBHE and NE HERC have collaborated to post jobs on www.nebhe.org's Joblink page.

Mariko Silver, a senior advisor to high-profile Arizona State University President Michael Crow, was appointed president of Bennington College succeeding Elizabeth Coleman, who led Bennington for 25 years. Silver previously served as acting assistant secretary for international affairs and deputy assistant secretary for international policy of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Coleman wrote articles for NEJHE (the called Connection) on the arts and the college presidency.

The Springfield College Board of Trustees approved Mary-Beth Cooper as the 13th president of the college, starting by Sept. 1. Cooper currently is senior vice president for student affairs at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, NY. She was previously dean of students at the University of Rochester and vice president for student affairs at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

University of Maine System Chancellor James H. Page extended University of Southern Maine President Theo Kalikow’s appointment for an additional year. Her original, two-year appointment was scheduled to end on June 30, 2014. Kalikow wrote a NEJHE (Connection) review of a book on the future of the public university,

Among Comings and Goings, Roxbury CC Changes at the Top

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education approved Valerie R. Roberson, currently vice president for academic affairs at Joliet Junior College in Illinois and former president of Olive-Harvey College, to be the 15th president of Roxbury Community College, effective July 22. A March report requested by trustees showed systematic lapses over the past decade by administrators at the college. Roberson will replace Linda Edmunds Turner, who served as interim president after Terrence Gomes resigned last summer. Gov. Deval Patrick, meanwhile, appointed Year Up founder Gerald Chertavian to chair the board of the community college, replacing Kathy Taylor, who is taking a job at the state Department of Higher Education. The group called Friends of Roxbury Community College wrote Patrick to protest his appointment of a white person to lead the predominantly black institution.

Rev. John Denning C.S.C. was named president of Stonehill College, where he is currently vice president for student affairs. He will succeed Rev. Mark T. Cregan C.S.C. who is stepping down after 13 years and has served as a NEBHE delegate for seven years.

Richard J. Murnane, the Juliana W. and William Foss Thompson Professor of Education and Society at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), was named acting dean of HGSE, succeding Kathleen McCartney who is leaving Harvard to become president of Smith College.

Framingham State University President Timothy Flanagan accepted the presidency of Illinois State University after seven years leading Framingham State.

Ben C. Hammond was named vice president for finance and administration at Wellesley College, succeeding Andrew B. Evans who will retire on June 30. Hammond is currently vp for finance and administration and treasurer at Mount Holyoke College.

Physicist Elizabeth Ivey, provost emeritus and professor of mechanical engineering emeritus at the University of Hartford. was elected chair of the Mitchell College Board of Trustees.

Bunker Hill Names New Prez; Giles Elevated to Head VSAC; Jones to Step Down at Trinity

Pam Y. Eddinger, president of Moorpark College in California since 2008 and former vice president of MassBay Community College, was named president of Bunker Hill Community College effective July 1. She will succeed Mary L. Fifield who is retiring after more than 16 years heading Bunker Hill.

Scott Giles, a vice president of Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) since joining the organization in 2003, was named to succeed longtime President and CEO Don Vickers. Giles will take the reins on July 1, when Vickers retires after 42 years with the organization.

James F. Jones Jr. announced he will step down from the presidency of Trinity College on June 30, 2014—a year earlier than previously planned. Jones denied the move stemmed from fall protests over a plan requiring fraternities and sororities to go coed.

Keene State College appointed Anne E. Huot to be its 10th president, beginning July 1. For the past six years, she served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at The College at Brockport, State University of New York. She holds a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology from the University of New Hampshire and a master's and doctorate from the University of Vermont.

Asnuntuck Community College President Martha McLeod announced in a letter to students and faculty she will retire on June 30, after leading the school for 10 years.

Thomas Mitzel, a former chemistry professor and associate dean of academic affairs at Trinity College who left two years ago to become a dean at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, will return to Trinity on July 1 as dean of the faculty and vice president for academic affairs.

Prez Changes at Marian Court, Springfield; First CFO at Amherst and a Valentine at Sacred Heart

Marian Court College trustees approved the appointment of Denise A. Hammon as the college's fourth president. She had been serving as interim president since August 2012.

Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn announced he will retire on Aug. 31, after 14 years as president.

Amherst College tapped Kevin Weinman, Dartmouth College’s assistant vice president of finance, to be Amherst’s first-ever chief financial officer. In December, we reported that Amherst named its first-ever provost: Belgium-native Peter Uvin, former academic dean and professor at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Sacred Heart University appointed former Boston Red Sox manager and Stamford, Conn. native Bobby Valentine as executive director of intercollegiate athletics, replacing outgoing director C. Donald Cook.

Dartmouth Names Prez; AUC Appoints Interim in Quest to Win Back Degree Granting; Amherst Taps Its First Provost

Among recent comings & goings:

Dartmouth College named mathematician and University of Michigan Provost Philip J. Hanlon to be its next president starting in July. Hanlon will succeed Jim Yong Kim, who resigned in April to become the president of the World Bank.

The Atlantic Union College Board of Trustees appointed general surgeon Duane M. Cady, M.D. as interim president of the Lancaster, Mass. college. The college has applied to the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education to reestablish its degree-granting authority after the New England Association of Schools and Colleges discontinued the college's accreditation in 2010 for financial reasons.

Amherst College named its first-ever provost: Belgium-native Peter Uvin, former academic dean and professor at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and an expert in development, conflict and human rights in Africa, will begin at Amherst this summer.

Patricia A. Ciccone, the superintendent of the state's Vocational-Technical High School System, announced she will leave the system in January to become superintendent of Westbrook Public Schools.

Quinebaug Valley Community College President Ross Tomlin submitted his resignation to the Board of Regents for Higher Education after three years leading the 2,500-student college. A spokeswoman for the Board of Regents said Tomlin's departure has nothing to do with the central office's controversial offer, since rescinded, of expedited separation for community college presidents.

Changes for Long-Serving NE Higher Ed Leaders

Among recent comings and goings, Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., president of Saint Anselm College, announced he will retire in June 2013, after leading the college since 1989. Bunker Hill Community College President Mary L. Fifield also announced she will retire in June, after 16 years.

Don Vickers said he also will retire as president and CEO of the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) in June, after 41 years with the state student aid group.

Richard Pattenaude, chancellor of the University of Maine System from 2007 to 2012 and before that, president of the University of Southern Maine, was named president of Ashford University, an Iowa-based for-profit holding of Bridgepoint Education. Pattenaude recently wrote for NEJHE about the system's attempts to deal with financial stresses.

Among Comings and Goings, Levin Leaving Yale Presidency after 20 Years, UNH System Head MacKay to Step Down

Yale University President Richard C. Levin announced he will step down at the end of the current academic year, after 20 years of service—a longer tenure than any other president in the Ivy League or the 61-member Association of American Universities.

University System of New Hampshire Chancellor Edward MacKay will step down from the post in March after 36 years with the system and three-plus as chancellor.

Sacred Heart University appointed John Chalykoff as the new dean of the John F. Welch College of Business. Chalykoff had served in various capacities at Boston University since 1999.

The University of Rhode Island appointed Naomi R. Thompson, an attorney and Northeastern University diversity administrator, to the position of associate vice president of Community, Equity and Diversity, effective Aug. 27. She will act as liaison for the president with commissions, the Bias Incident Response Team, and diversity committees throughout the university. Her office includes the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, Multicultural Center, Women’s Center and the LGBTQ Center.

The New England Conservatory appointed Kairyn Rainer, a pianist and manager with the Brown Rudnick law firm, to be conservatory's chief of staff, effective Aug. 27.

Wheelock College named Linda Davis to be dean of its Center for International Programs and Partnerships.
