				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Award-winning author Salman Rushdie will open Eastern Connecticut State University’s 11<sup>th</sup> <a href="http://www.easternct.edu/mt-static/press_releases/2011/08/rushdie-kicks-off-annual-arts-and-lecture-series.html" target="_blank">Annual Arts and Lecture Series</a> on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., in the university's student center. Rushdie is the author of 10 fictional novels inspired by his homeland of India, including <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Verses_controversy" target="_blank"><em>The Satanic Verses</em></a>, which led the spiritual leader of Iran to issue a fatwa calling for Rushdie's execution.</p>
<p>Other speakers in the ECSU series will include television and film actor Dan Lauria on Nov. 14 and international reporter Laura Ling on March 13.</p>

<p>The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) will hold its ninth annual New   England Higher Education Excellence Awards on <strong>Friday, March 11,</strong> at the <strong>Boston Marriott Long Wharf Hotel</strong>.</p>
<p>Each year, NEBHE presents Regional Excellence Awards to individuals and organizations that have shown exceptional leadership on behalf of higher education and the advancement of educational opportunity, and State Merit Awards to honor the innovative work of organizations, institutions or individuals in each New England state.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.easternct.edu/" target="_blank">Eastern Connecticut State University</a> (ECSU) will  host a lecture by <a href="http://www.uconn.edu/" target="_blank">University of Connecticut</a> economics professor <a href="http://ideas.repec.org/e/pca81.html" target="_blank">Fred Carstensen</a>, director of the <a href="http://ccea.uconn.edu/" target="_blank">Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis</a>, on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m., in the J. Eugene Smith Library.</p>
<p>The lecture is part of the <a href="http://www.easternct.edu/chase/" target="_blank">David T. Chase Free Enterprise Institute's Distinguished Lecture Series</a> and is open to the public.</p>
<p>Carstensen has completed more than 100 studies during his tenure with CCEA and authored and edited numerous books and articles on economic, political and business development around the world.</p>
