Northeastern University's Open Classroom Series will feature “Campaign 2012: Policy Advice to the President.” to be held every Wednesday evening from Sept. 5 through Dec. 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the university's West Village F. Moderators will include: Barry Bluestone, founding dean of Northeastern's School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs; Massachusetts state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz; Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo; former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, the Democratic nominee for president in 1988 and a professor of Political Science at Northeastern; and Newton, Mass. Mayor Setti Warren. (Admission is free.)

The New England Council's Congressional Roundtables will feature a breakfast discussion with U.S. Rep. John Tierney (D-Mass.) on Monday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at Boston's Hampshire House. Future roundtables convened by the regional business group will include: U.S. Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Providence Biltmore Hotel in Providence, R.I.; U.S. Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) on Monday, Sept. 24, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Burlington Hilton in Burlington, Vt.; and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) on Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at PretiFlaherty, One City Center, in Portland, Maine. (Free to New England Council members.)

The Nelson A. Rockefeller Center at Dartmouth College will host a variety of speakers through the academic year, starting with former U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) on Monday, Sept. 17, at 4:30 p.m. in Dartmouth's Silsby Hall. Other speakers in the series will include Alice Rivlin of the Brookings Institution on Thursday, Oct. 18. The series will culminate in a panel discussion on Thursday, Nov. 8, exploring "What Now? Post-Election Opportunities & Challenges." (Admission is free.)

Charles Gibson, former "ABC World News" anchor, will deliver the lecture, "The (Im)Balance of Power in Washington: How Things Went Off the Rails and How They Can Be Fixed," on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Burt Kahn Court on Quinnipiac University's Mount Carmel Campus. (Admission is free.)

Author and political commentator Michael Barone will deliver the keynote address, "Election 2012 and the American Experiment," at Pioneer Institute's 2012 Better Government Competition Awards ceremony on Monday, Sept. 24 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Boston. Barone is senior political analyst at The Washington Examiner, a Fox News contributor, and co-author of The Almanac of American Politics, which is published biennially by National Journal. The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) will hold its eleventh annual New England Higher Education Excellence Award at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf Hotel on March 8, 2013.

Four regional awards will be presented to individuals and organizations from higher education, government and business sectors that exemplify excellence in higher education in one or more of the following areas: leadership, innovation, diversity, partnerships and collaborations or educational opportunity.

In addition, there will be six state merit awards—one in each of the New England states—presented to an individual, program, organization, institution or business for exemplifying, through their work, excellence in promoting college readiness and success for the students of New England.

More than 6,500 leaders in academic pediatrics from around the world will converge on Boston for the 2012 annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies to be held Saturday, April 28 through Tuesday, May 1, at the Hynes Convention Center.

Speakers will address topics such as: how a child’s genes, early environment, nutrition and other factors affect future disease risk; signs of mental illnesses in young children; the quality of the food supply; stopping obesity; and weighing recommendations on vitamin D.

Astronaut Gregory E. Chamitoff will keynote the meeting with a talk about his time on the space station and NASA’s goal of inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.

More than 3,000 scientific papers will be presented on topics from prematurity and infancy through adolescence and diseases that carry into adulthood.

The American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) will hold its fifth annual Climate Leadership Summit at American University in Washington, D.C., from Thursday, June 21 at 4 p.m. to Friday, June 22 at 4 p.m.

In 2006, 12 college and university presidents agreed to become founding members of the ACUPCC. Today, nearly 700 institutions are actively engaged in creating a low-carbon future through education, research, community engagement and operations. The ACUPCC is supported by the Boston-based nonprofit, Second Nature. More than 90 New England colleges and universities are ACUPCC signatories.

The summit will focus on:

• Preparedness: Education for sustainability, career preparedness and the relevance of higher education in the 21st century.
• Opportunity: Increasing access and affordability through cost savings and new funding for sustainability efforts.
• Innovation: Campuses as cradles of innovation through research, experimentation, community engagement and role-modeling solutions in operations.

At the Summit, the ACUPCC will launch:

• A five-year strategy for sustainability-literacy and engage corporate representatives on the educational needs of the 21^st century workforce.
• A case-statement for major investments in higher education’s sustainability leadership to improve accessibility and affordability of higher education, and engage CFOs, corporate and government representatives on financing strategies.
• A five-year report, highlighting groundbreaking campus sustainability initiatives and community partnerships on climate mitigation and adaptation.
