Through the Vermont State Colleges Office of External Programs, assessment options are available statewide at the VSC campuses and academic centers. To date, more than 7,000 Vermonters have taken advantage of the PLA portfolio preparation course, which is based on standards developed by the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning. It has been an extremely successful program. Students completing the PLA course use their awarded credits towards a degree. Meanwhile, four additional options are available to students to earn credit for prior learning: individual course challenges, a focused portfolio process, credit by examination through CLEP and DSST testing, and the evaluation of organizational training and education for college-level equivalency. Vermont is in the fortunate position of offering these well established and accessible options to adult students wishing to start or complete degrees or certifications. College-level learning gained through professional experience, community involvement, military experience, or independent study is honored and rewarded. Prior Learning Assessment is a significant service to our Vermont adult and non-traditional students, and it is accessible and available.
