I must say, its too good to be true. I am really trying to digest the phrase I have read that "MOOCs are available to anyone and they are free." Then I found out that there are credits upon the completion of of MOOC, instead a certificate and that's not bad.. The thing is, it always surprises me when there are gimmicks about free stuff inside education area because like I have always wanted, College should be for free and not as a form of business. I appreciate this post and I am looking forward to the program to be as good as they say.

At Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, NC, we plan to fully embrace MOOCs. For example, we are currently developing an Introductory Algebra Review MOOC to provide our students with a review prior to the entrance placement exam. Our MOOC will be aligned to our current seated course standards and students will be assessed with the same rigor. Our seated developmental math classes will utilize the MOOC as supplemental instruction. Additionally, many humanities and science courses will utilize the MOOC when algebra review is necessary. We envision the MOOC as being highly effective with a portion of our students and plan to conduct research with NC State University through a comparison study.

While human interaction is essential for learning, we believe that the online support system within the community of learners will be a motivator for students to stay engaged. Rather than one instructor responding to all students, the students will become part of a large social network of students learning from and with each other in a virtual world. It seems the MOOC openness would strengthen learning communities unless they are rigidly defined as human face to face interaction. Students are as connected to their devices and technology as they are to face-to-face interactions. MOOCs will leverage this characteristic of interacting.

We have other MOOCs planned particularly for key gatekeeper courses to assist students in their progression through degree programs. We see MOOCs as a component of our Completion Agenda to increase the number of students earning credentials.
