New England colleges and universities enrolled 53,481 foreign students in 2010—about three times as many as they did in 1980, according to "early release" data from the New York City-based Institute of International Education.
For the U.S. overall, foreign student enrollment increased by 2.9% in 2010 over the previous year. New England campuses attract 7.7% of all foreign students who enroll in the U.S.
