From Artists to Senators, NE Commencement Speakers Look to Inspire

Philip Altbach, director of the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College, will deliver the address at Rivier University’s 78th commencement on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass.

Carlotta Walls LaNier, one of the “Little Rock Nine” group of African-American students who desegregated Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. in 1957, will keynote Eastern Connecticut State University’s commencement on Tuesday, May 14, at 6 p.m. at the XL Center in 
Hartford.

Mark K. Shriver, a children’s advocate who leads Save the Children’s U.S. Programs, will deliver Wheelock College’s undergraduate commencement address on Friday, May 17, at 10 a.m. at Temple Israel in Boston. Hubert “Hubie” E. Jones, a Boston civil rights advocate, will deliver the graduate commencement address on Friday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at the Wheelock Family Theatre.

Setti Warren, mayor of Newton, Mass., will keynote Mount Ida College’s commencement  on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. on the campus lawn.

Marilyn “Lynn” Malerba, chief of the Mohegan Tribe, will address Mitchell College’s 69th commencement on Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m., on the College’s Great Lawn.

Community leader Marian L. Heard will keynote Springfield College’s graduate commencement on Saturday, May 18, at 9:30 a.m. on the college’s Naismith Green. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will keynote the undergraduate commencement on Sunday, May 19, at 9:30 a.m. at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield.

Jonathan Safran Foer, author of  Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, will keynote the 2013 Middlebury College commencement on Sunday, May 26, at 10 a.m. on the college’s main quadrangle.

Stephanie Wilson, an astronaut with NASA, will keynote Berkshire Community College’s 53rd commencement on Friday, May 31, at 4:30 p.m. at Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass.

Maira Kalman, illustrator and frequent cover artist and contributor to The New Yorker, will deliver Rhode Island School of Design’s commencement address on Saturday, June 1, at at 10:30 a.m. at the Rhode Island Convention Center in downtown Providence.
